We’re going to visit some random relatives for Thanksgiving, so I don’t really have much cooking to plan. But I’m rallying ideas for a side dish to bring. I’m thinking dessert?
Apple Pie I was raised a devout worshiper of Betty Crocker, Patron Saint of Baked Goods. Not sure if this is the same recipe from the big old cookbook I grew up with, but you get the idea. I plan on calling my dad for the real recipe to make sure. Tip for the lazy: Don’t get fooled into thinking homemade crusts are essential. They’re nice, but you’ve got better things to do on Thanksgiving. Like eat. Pillsbury ready-made pie crusts are perfect and delicious every time. Especially if you use the tin-foil-over-the-crust-edge trick. Serve with a slice of sharp white cheddar.
Pumpkin Roll. Ok, I know pumpkin pie is apparently what Thanksgiving is all about, but I think I really only eat it because I feel like I have to and I can put tons of whipped cream on it. This is my fight-the-man-but-get-my-pumpkin-fix remedy. Too bad the boyfriend is against all things cream cheese. Loser.
Cranberry and orange relish. You will never go back to the cranberry jell-o still in the shape of the can. This is actually really easy with just your blender/food processor and is so fresh and yummy. And includes liqueur. What more could you ask for?
That’s about all I can think of, since other people are making the actual dinner. Should I bring wine, too? I think so. Wine is always a good choice.
